Senator Boxer: Funding for Oakland Law Enforcement

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

The Senate’s Appropriations Committee recently approved the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill (S.3182).  I am happy to let you know that I asked that funding be included for the City of Oakland’s “Grow our Own” Police Recruitment Program.

The "Grow our Own" Police Recruitment Program is aimed at hiring 40 Oakland residents to serve as patrol officers within the Oakland Police Department.  Funding for this program will improve public safety by attracting and retaining those who understand the challenges Oakland faces and who are committed to reducing crime and violence in their community.

Violence has already touched the lives of too many. That is why it is so important to bolster this police recruitment program, which will go a long way toward helping our families and law enforcement in Oakland.

This bill still has several steps to go before it becomes law.  However, having the program included at this initial stage is a very important step.  You can count on me to continue to work for federal funding for this important program that will serve the residents of Oakland.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer, US Senator, California
