Senator Boxer: Protecting Airline Passengers with Disabilities

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Dear Friend:

A recent incident in which a young Californian with Down syndrome and his parents were denied the opportunity to board a plane was an unfortunate reminder of the difficulties that people with disabilities and their families too often face while traveling.

This week, I wrote to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood urging him to ensure that air carriers meet their legal responsibilities to train their staff to be sensitive and responsive to customers with disabilities.  I also encouraged the agency to work with the National Down Syndrome Society and other advocates to improve the airlines’ training programs for employees. All of our families deserve to be treated with dignity and respect when they travel.  Working together, we can make sure that promise is a reality for every American.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer, US Senator, California
