The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced that it will launch a new program to monitor for toxic air pollution near schools. Though we can be assured that most schools are safe for our children, it is important to know when that is not the case. This testing will provide that important information.
When EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson appeared before the Committee on Environment Public Works for her confirmation hearings, I urged that she consider establishing a program to address high pollution levels near schools. During our discussion, we focused on my concern that our children’s health could be harmed by exposure to chemical contamination near their schools. Administrator Jackson agreed to take immediate action, and with this announcement, that promise has been kept. Children are our future, and we need to ensure they have a safe and healthy one.
