I am pleased to let you know that federal funds will go to a program in the City of San Bernardino that is intended to keep young people out of gangs and encourage them to continue in school.  This continues federal funding to help this program operate in San Bernardino schools. 

The City of San Bernardino’s G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program will receive $500,000 to be used to continue its school-based partnership among the city, county probation, and the school district.  In a region that sees too many young people involved in gangs and too many crimes committed by gang members, this funding can help to stop the problem before it begins.

Last year, I visited a school where G.R.E.A.T. students were cheering for one another during an awards ceremony.  They were happy to be at school and engaged in their education.  These types of programs can have a significant impact during an influential time in a child’s life.

I was very pleased to support continued funding for San Bernardino’s GREAT program and look forward to hearing of its continued successes.
