The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) recently announced the availability of funding under the COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP). Funding for this program will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (H.R.1), better known as “the stimulus bill.”
CHRP is a competitive grant program that provides funding directly to law enforcement agencies having primary law enforcement authority to create and preserve jobs. The CHRP grant program is designed both to increase hiring by local police agencies and to increase community policing capacity and crime-prevention efforts.
Up to $1 billion in grant funding will be available for the hiring and rehiring of additional career law enforcement officers. Potential applicants are advised that applications for CHRP grants are due by April 14, 2009.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan will impact all communities in America, and CHRP is one that can have enormous local benefits. It can help to realize the goals of H.R.1 to create jobs, protect our communities, and transform our economy for the new century.
Sincerely,
