Many San Diegans have watched with concern as the construction project for the new United States Federal Courthouse Annex in downtown San Diego was stalled by rising costs. It appeared for a short time that this project would face long delays, with inadequate court facilities and a project at a standstill.
I am happy to let you know that the recent appropriations bill has addressed the funding shortfall, and construction should be able to be completed. The 16-story building on Broadway between State and Union streets will provide state-of-the art security, adequate court space, and secure holding facilities. It could also help to spur economic growth in the local area.
The existing San Diego courthouse is one of the busiest border courts in the country, with over 200 in-custody defendants each day. Expansion of this facility has been a top priority for some time. I am very pleased that it will now move forward.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
