It is very good news to people who live and work near the Golden Gate Bridge that federal stimulus funds will be allocated to help pay for the reconstruction of Doyle Drive, the main southern approach to the Golden Gate Bridge. This roadway is currently used by more than 100,000 vehicles a day, making it one of the Bay Area’s busiest roads. Most engineering and transportation experts agree that Doyle Drive, which is structurally unsafe, could collapse in a major earthquake.
Because the reconstruction of Doyle Drive was considered to be “shovel ready,” it was eligible for funding. This major construction project is expected to create about 500 jobs in the construction industry, one severely hurt by our current economic downturn. And, because these funds will be made available very soon, construction could begin this year instead of next, with a completion date expected in 2014.
This project, along with the other transportation construction projects that will receive funding from the federal stimulus, will help to create good-paying jobs for Californians and jumpstart our economy.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
